The course will give an overview of how a normatively negative speech act can be characterized from a linguistic point of view. It is especially pragmatic categories of analysis that are invoked in trying to arrive at a definition of a lie, to establish a typology of lying and to discuss the legal aspects of lying. Moving from the perpetrator to the side of the hearer or law enforcement, we will look at what linguistics can contribute to detecting lies.
